MADURAI: Seeking full waiver of road and green taxes that account for Rs 21 in every litre of diesel they purchase, fishermen led by the South Asian Fishermen Fraternity (SAFF) staged a protest at the Colachel fishing harbour in Kanyakumari district on Saturday.
SAFF general secretary Churchil, who led the protest, said the price they pay for one litre of diesel include Rs 18 road tax and Rs 3 green tax.
“There are neither roads nor any green initiative carried out by the government in the sea as they are neither necessary nor possible. So the government should stop swindling money from the fishermen for no reason,” Churchil said.
The most affected are the multi-day deep sea fishing vessels and the trawlers that use high power engines and need around 3,000 to 5,000 litres diesel per trip, they said.
