Kollam: The US-based company EMCC’s president Shiju Varghese has announced that he will contest from Kundara as an independent candidate against minister J Mercykuttyamma.
Varghese’s plan is to contest as an independent candidate and tell the people about what transpired between his company and state-owned KSINC, leading to the formal signing of an MoU.
He said that the fisheries minister cheated him by unilaterally withdrawing from the project.
The minister had denied Varghese’s claim that she had met him or any EMCC official when she visited the US to attend a meeting of the United Nations two years ago. She had also denied that Varghese met her in her office to expedite the project aimed at deep-sea fishing off the coast of Kerala.
Varghese’s decision to contest against Mercykuttyamma at Kundara is likely to evoke some response against her. A good chunk of the electorate at Kundara eke out a living by fishing. It would help create the impression that the minister had done something detrimental to the interests of the fisherfolk and the state.
The opposition UDF and BJP would try to keep the issue burning during the poll campaign. tnn
