POINGUINIM: After a virtual sweep in the Canacona Municipal Council by BJP-supported candidates, deputy speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes made it clear that he would be re-contesting from Canacona in the next assembly elections.
Fernandes said he would continue to work for the people of Canacona. “Yes, I am very much there for the next assembly elections,” he said, responding to a question from reporters as to whether he would be seeking re-election in the next assembly polls.
The statement comes in the wake of speculations some time ago that Fernandes may not contest due to personal reasons. He was among the ten Congress MLAs who had switched over to BJP in July 2019.
Only four councillors of the outgoing council were re-elected while eight were either completely new faces or those making a comeback. “People have shown that they want new faces,” Fernandes said. No formal panel was floated by any politician.
The victory comes three months after Fernandes managed to bag both the ZP seats.
