COIMBATORE: Actor Kamal Haasan-led Makkal Needhi Maiam has promised to introduce a separate entrance examination — called the state eligibility cum entrance test (SEET) — for medical admission in Tamil Nadu if it is voted to power. SEET will replace the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, which most government school students in the state find difficult to clear. The party’s manifesto, released by Kamal in Coimbatore, said SEET question papers would be framed based on the state board syllabus, thus making it easy for the students to crack it easily.
The party also promised to provide jobs to 50 lakh – one crore people and would double the per capita income within ten years.
The manifesto says Class X and XII public examinations will be abolished. Instead, a four-year-long pregraduation programme will be introduced from Class IX. Only one examination – either public examination or entrance examination- will be held.
Kamal called the manifesto a ‘living document’ which was prepared with a long-term vision and not as a mere plaster to cover problems in the view of the upcoming state assembly election.
He said instead of relying only on tax and getting loans for the state’s revenue, the party has come up with better ideas to promote growth, generate revenue and also to bring the state out of debt.
Kamal said at a time when the state was in huge debt, freebies and doles promised by other parties would only increase the state’s burden.
He said government-run enterprises like Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation could be turned profitable by making its employees as shareholders.
Speaking about financial assistance to housewives promised other parties, Kamal said, “We would be creating an environment for housewives to earn by honing their skills. With the skill development, women will be able to earn better on their own.”
