Gurgaon: The much- hyped auction of two land parcels belonging to gangster Sube Gujjar failed to attract bidders on Wednesday. Despite repeated assurances from the police that they will provide security to the bidders, the scheduled auction drew little attention from buyers.
Police also failed to come up with complete documents of the plots.
Four people had expressed interest in buying the land parcels, but they returned after finding that the documents produced by the police are incomplete. The properties are co-owned by Gujjar. Only shares owned by Gujjar can be auctioned as per the rules. Police will have to clarify which portions of the land parcels are owned by Gujjar before auctioning the same.
Station house officer (SHO) of Kherki Daula station Krishan Kant said they will schedule the auction after the court sets a date for it. “People are apprehensive of buying properties belonging to criminals. They fear for their safety. Police will ensure safety of the buyers,” he said.
Two weeks ago, the Punjab and Haryana high court had vacated the stay over auction of Gujjar’s properties.
In 2018, in a move to curb the financial muscle of proclaimed offenders, a special task force (STF) of the Haryana Police had attached two pieces of land — 1.3 acre in Bar Gujjar village near Manesar and 0.8 acre in Manesar industrial area — registered in the name of Gujjar. The market value of the plots is around Rs 6 crore.
The district administration had decided to auction the land in February 2019, but the gangster’s mother, who is on the run, filed a petition in the court against the move. Following this, the court had stayed the process.
The second attempt to auction the plots was made by Jthe authorities after the court vacated the stay in March first week.
Gujjar is one of the most wanted criminals with a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head. He is still on the run. Most other gangsters, including Kaushal, have been arrested.
A Gurgaon court had declared Gujjar as a proclaimed offender in April last year. His wife, who is a sarpanch, is also on the run.
