JAIPUR: Diesel-run commercial vehicles older than 15 years will not be allowed in major cities of the state from March 31 and officials claimed that this will be done in a phased manner to curb increasing pollution.
Teams will be placed at borders to check for the documents to ensure that vehicles meet the criteria for entering.
The truck operators, meanwhile, claimed that they would face huge losses with this new restriction and have also written to the state transport minister regarding the same.
“After March 31, commercial vehicles older than 15 years being run on diesel will not be allowed in Jaipur, Kota and Jodhpur. These vehicles’ category will not be allowed to be changed from next month. At present, this ban is for these cities and might get extended to others as well. Checking will be done at the borders to ensure that the restriction is followed. These vehicles will not be issued fitness certificates as well. This should greatly reduce the pollution level in these major cities and surrounding areas,” said an official of the transport department.
There are over four lakh commercial vehicles in the state and the transporters have written to the state transport minister requesting for an extension of one year for this ban to be imposed.
